One thing that has changed since I’ve been off work is our eating habits.
We’ve gone from cooking at home once a month to eating fast food or eating out maybe twice in that time; what a dramatic shift. It began as laziness, probably. Since I was already at home, bra-less and in my pajamas all day, it took quite the effort to get dressed and drive up the street for burgers. I hate shoes, and my pantry doesn’t require any.
The most difficult part of the transition was Jon Alex. He’s never met a chicken nugget he couldn’t toss in the trash after nibbling on only half the pack between Lego Star Wars and the Simpsons XBox marathons. Food prepared in a kitchen is only for grandma’s house and is to be eaten at granny gunpoint. He cried and refused and pouted for a good six weeks before finally settling into a semi-routine. Once I explained to my mini-miser that eating out is a waste of money when we have food in the house, his money-grubbing lights started blinking every time I suggested I didn’t feel like cooking that night. Instead of KFC, we’d end up at the grocery store asking the Cooking Connections people what was for dinner. Saves money and the kids give me love looks on stir-fry night.
I stumbled over the nicest people at vegansaurus when Laura was looking for a web content writer. As you all know by now, my new plan is to apply, be rejected, rinse lather repeat for the next 600 years. It’s working well but for the no paycheck part, and it gives me an excuse to start drinking before noon. Anyway, Laura and I totally bonded over my writing for free, and I am completely looking forward to reviewing various vegan recipes that I prepare for my little knuckleheads.
The first one, posted on Friday, is for Mexican hot chocolate snickerdoodles, chosen because if it’s one thing I love more than anything, it’s Mexicans. At the bottom of the post, I got my very own post tag, which excited me as if they’d given me a company car.
Go say hi to Laura for me. And comment on my recipe post! [Laura's readers are shy around black people]
I saw that post and thought the kid pix were fantastic. I’ll go comment for you.
