today’s optimism comes in white diamond

2010 Chevy Malibu white diamond edition

Yesterday was a long day.

I’m not feeling the panic of my contract ending that I should be feeling, probably because I’m too numb from so many other things going on, yet in my sub-panic, I have a to-do list a mile long. One thing with a thick red line underneath it: test driving the 2010 Chevy Malibu for the next four weeks. It is a sponsored promotion by a group of local Chevy dealers, and I took delivery of our new car at Norman Frede Chevrolet near Johnson Space Center. Walked in looking laid off for the second time in 12 months, but no one thought twice about handing me the keys. I’m guessing my full hobo look has yet to take effect. Lindsay, the dealer’s Internet specialist, even asked me to shoot a quick video. Once I post the link, I’m hoping you can’t tell which side of my hair I’ve been losing. Argh.

I have a limited amount of miles I’m allowed to put on the car, so my original plan was to drive it only on the weekends. But the baby’s carseat is secure from the ride home from the dealership and I’m always running late in the morning and I was too tired to move the seat into my Toyota when we got home, plus it’s such a beautiful car, so I’m driving her to work the rest of the week, okay? Gaw. I’ll drive my own car, stuck in 90 minutes of traffic each way, starting Monday.

My grouchiness kinda took over when we first got in the Malibu when Jordan started raving about the XM radio and warm interior. Don’t get used to it, I snapped. Ugh. What is wrong with me? She knows we’re promoting the car, and she was contributing to the discussion, and I’m now the worst promo mother ever. I’ll apologize to her before I leave for work listening to the XM, chatting over the Bluetooth and, perhaps, discovering a shorter commute through OnStar.

I’ve read other bloggers’ posts during this Chevy social media campaign, and I’ve wondered how different their reviews would have been had they not been regularly driving a 15-year-old car. In that case, any new car would seem nice and would prompt all kinds of platitudes. Especially when your beater, like one of my old beaters, refuses to shift into reverse in freezing temperatures. The Toyota  I’m now driving is only 18 months old. I like it. I’m proud that I manage to pay the note without resorting to criminal activity. I expected to be not impressed with a Chevrolet, much less the Malibu.

I stand humbly corrected, and that’s only after the seven-mile drive home. Although this is a sponsored promo, any ravings by the kids or me will be our own opinions and Chevy hasn’t implanted any mind-control devices anywhere near the car or my blog. As soon as I find something inconvenient or confusing about the Malibu, I’ll share it. So far? I love the little compartment thingie between the windshield and the dashboard for storing sunglasses, garage remote, key cards and whatnot. Much better than reaching all the way over into the glove box while driving.

Praying Ehren doesn’t immediately notice his rear entertainment system and Elmo DVD are missing? In comments…

I rented one over the Thanksgiving holiday last year and was more than impressed with the tricked out Malibu I drove. Jordan is right for loving the XM it was the highlight of my rental. That and the sunroof!

    Sending you positive job vibes,
    Tex

Missing: sunroof. Can’t locate: cup holders.

Why don’t I feel worried? Maybe I died earlier this week, and no one told me.

Is this the result of the Twitter-link video audition thingie you did?

That video wasn’t an audition…haha…probably looked like one. I’d already been selected for the program, and that was my stab at introducing myself to the world beyond the pages of free fringes. I found out about the program through Business2Blogger.com.

Oh right on. Nice! I hope this will open some huge doors for you. The right eyes need to land on these pages on yours. You and the fam deserves to be recognized by the world at large.

Do you think you’d consider trading in your vehicle for the Malibu? I mean, what if you fall absolutely in love with it…do you think they’d give you a mad discount b/c of your promotion of it?

I’ve been enjoying hubs’ Sirius for the past week, since he’s gotten a new car(new to him) and has yet to take it out of his old car. I never thought I’d like it so much…I mostly listen to the 80′s on 8, but there’s a ton of talk radio too.

I’m feeling good things coming your way.

So far, this is an apples to oranges comparison since I chose an XUV over a sedan for very specific reasons when I was in the market for a new vehicle. I think the mad discount lies somewhere between the ours-to-keep Flip videocam and the decreased wear-and-tear on my Toyota for the month.

OMG, that 80s on 8 makes me feel like I’m in high school all over again, and that’s not a good thing. I made Jordan find another station, and we landed on Disney.

      Thanks for the good vibes!

I want a car with satellite radio. That would make my commute far more enjoyable, but for now I am stuck reading about it.

That is ok, hope you enjoy the time in the promo vehicle, it sounds cool.

Hey, thanks! I’m still getting used to it, and I’m cranking out over stuff not being where I think it should be, but after a few more days, I’ll start to enjoy it. Change is good.

I must say, yours is far removed from a dull existence.

    I
    Love
    Cars

More than that, I love new cars.

What’s the limit on miles? Are there enough for family road trip to the mid-Atlantic?

I wouldn’t use the satellite radio if I were you. From personal experience I can safely say you will miss it and suffer withdrawal symptoms when you’re forced to quit cold turkey.
